This is a re-post from triviawar.proboards54.com. I can't get over how much I hate this movie.
First of all, it was a ridiculous premise that was never properly explained, as far as WHY or HOW this guy was aging backward.
Second, it was trying to be Forrest Gump and The Notebook, both wonderful and award-winning films. We had the captain (aka Lieutenant Dan), the woman Ben kept coming back to (his Jennnay), the death of the parent(s), and the woman who remained by Ben's side even when he no longer recognized her & use of a novel to tell the story (a la The Notebook).
Third, there was very little demonstration of the two leads ever falling in love. When did it happen? It's never even addressed that there is a romantic connection until Ben goes to New York and sees that chick with the other dude.
Make-up was terrible. Horrendous. It was so obvious, especially on Pitt. The lines of makeup under eyes on the edge of his face were hard to ignore.
There were few redeeming qualities about any of the main characters. They were callous, and adulterous. Also, they showed very little emotion.
And most importantly, it was boring.
This movie seemed to be created with the primary purpose of being some kind of inspired, moving story but without the heart of the films it was mimicking.
I am hardly a film critic, and I RARELY hate anything, but I'm so pissed at the screenwriters and directors for thinking that I'm so stupid that I'll buy such an ambitious regurgitation of the elements that make up other films that I love. How dare they insult my intelligence!
Also, I freely admit that I love a lot of terrible and universally-panned movies, but I feel like those aren't trying to be anything more than what they are- a rollicking good time- and which Benjamin Button certainly isn't.
